As expected, the fight to create online poker legislation in California is heating up.
It has been reported previously that the biggest obstacle to the legislation is California's existing agreement with the Indian tribes that offer gambling within the state, and according to their compact with the State of California, have exclusive right to do so.
While claiming that the tribes do support the concept of intrastate poker being available in California, Morongo tribe spokesman Patrick Dorinson stated, "... we cannot support the bill in its present form."
Apparently Dorinson is not convinced that the current monopoly that the tribes enjoy will be maintained.
TASIN, an association of 11 federally recognized Indian tribes, sent a letter to the California Legislature, tribal governments and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in opposition to the proposed legislation, Senate Bill 1485, which is due to be heard on Tuesday, 29 June. It has been given "special order of business" status, which means that the hearing time has to be set for 3:30 pm. It will be heard prior to other pending measures that are due to be heard by the legislature on Tuesday.
