Two of the hottest teams in baseball will meet this weekend as the Los Angeles Dodgers play host to the Tampa Bay Rays in a surprisingly critical interleague set. With playoff berths in sight for either squad, each passing game could mean the difference between a spot in the postseason and falling just short.
Not only do the Rays and Dodgers sit in similar positions heading into the final stretch of the 2013 season, the clubs have had similar trajectories over the course of the campaign. As far as the MLB betting community is concerned, the two franchises have turned the odds on their head.
After starting slow in the American League East and National League West divisions – both last (or tied for last) in their division as recently as Game 73, the Rays and Dodgers wasted little time powering their way up the standings and into contention for their respective top spots.
While Tampa Bay currently finds itself in a two-horse race with the Boston Red Sox in the AL East, the Dodgers ended up jostling for supremacy among several lower-level contenders, the Arizona Diamondbacks chief among them.
Can the Dodgers, with 13/2 odds of winning the World Series, prove that they deserve such high expectations as they take on a Rays club (8/1 odds) that’s been down the same path?
