Until last weekend, the Oregon Ducks were cruising through their 2013 NCAA campaign comfortably pegged below the first-place Alabama Crimson Tide and ahead of everybody else in both the polls and college football futures. Suddenly, through no fault of their own, they’re back playing catch up.
Thanks to a monumental victory over Clemson in Week 8, the upstart ACC contender Florida State Seminoles squeezed from No. 5 in the AP rankings up to No. 2 in the BCS standings, bumping the still-undefeated Ducks down to No. 3 in the latter.
While ranking isn’t everything at this point in the season with so much left to play, the demotion could very well serve as an added incentive for the Ducks as they head into a Week 9 matchup against their toughest opponent yet.
We’re not sure what the No. 12 UCLA Bruins did to deserve this, but when they take the field this Saturday they can expect the full wrath of the Pac-12 giant. The Ducks may have slipped down a spot in the standings, but still have the second best long-term college football odds with a 7/4 shot of winning the BCS National Championship.
Pull up a seat as Mark Helfrich and company set out to clear up the discrepancy.
