Best MLB Matchups Of The Week: September 23-29

CITY-PINS-2-articleLargeThe last week of the season will feature all sorts of scenarios. Which pitching matchups will command the stage? It’s going to be hard to make easy calls in several situations.

Tampa Bay Rays @ New York Yankees

This is a Tuesday clash in the sportsbook between one of Tampa Bay’s most consistent starters and the pitcher who carried the Yankees through the first two weeks of August, only to lose steam over the past one and a half months. Tampa Bay’s Matt Moore goes to the mound with a 3.34 ERA. He did get pounded in his most recent outing last Thursday. Texas, which has been hitting poorly over the past three weeks, shelled Moore and knocked him out of the box before the sixth inning even arrived. New York starter Hiroki Kuroda carried the Yankees through Aug. 12, when his ERA stood at 2.33. Ever since then, the veteran has looked his age, getting tagged left and right while his ERA has soared to 3.17. With the Yankees falling out of the playoff picture, this will probably be Kuroda’s last start of the season.

Boston Red Sox @ Colorado Rockies

This is a weirdly intriguing matchup on the MLB odds on Tuesday between a proven veteran with a high ERA and an unproven youngster with a lower ERA. Jake Peavy takes the ball for the Red Sox with a 4.02 ERA. Yet, that ERA was 4.51 over a month ago. The trading deadline acquisition has not been overpowering, but he has slowly gotten better in recent weeks. Colorado is going with Tyler Chatwood, whose ERA was 2.48 on July 26 but has grown to 3.36. Chatwood missed August with injuries, and that lack of steady rhythm has emerged in recent starts. Getting used to the rigors of a full season has tested the 23-year-old.

Washington Nationals @ St. Louis Cardinals

This is a Wednesday matinee pairing two really good pitchers. Jordan Zimmermann has been the best, most durable pitcher for the Nationals this season, posting a 3.18 ERA and grabbing a 19-8 record. He’s coming off a complete-game shutout of Miami last Friday. Shelby Miller has been one of the five best rookies in the N.L. for the Cardinals, registering a 3.12 ERA and a 14-9 record.
