As the season pushes its way toward the end of August and the final few weeks of competition before the playoffs, pitching matchups will become more significant… and anticipated in the sportsbook.
Arizona Diamondbacks @ Cincinnati Reds
This is one of the best pitching matchups you’re going to see this week. Arizona staff ace Patrick Corbin brings a 2.48 ERA to the hill for this contest. What’s worth noting about Corbin’s past seven starts is that the only two times in which he allowed more than two runs were games in which he faced American League teams, the Baltimore Orioles (four runs) and the Boston Red Sox (three). Against National League teams, Corbin is continuing to throw down his very best. Cingrani is no slouch, either. The sparkling new addition to Cincinnati’s staff has a 2.78 ERA and has added to much to the Reds’ stable of arms in 2013.
Pittsburgh Pirates @ San Diego Padres
This is an intriguing matchup on the MLB odds on Tuesday night in Southern California. On one hand, San Diego starter Tyson Ross has certainly outpitched Pittsburgh starter A.J. Burnett in recent weeks. Burnett has a 3.18 ERA because of 11 runs allowed in his last two starts combined. Ross, on the other hand, has not allowed more than two runs in any of his last six outings. He has a sizzling 2.62 ERA and is giving the Padres a real lift. Will Pittsburgh’s overall quality be too much for Ross? Will Burnett continue to struggle, or will he regain the excellent form he’s displayed for most of the season?
Los Angeles Dodgers @ Miami Marlins
No one would deny that Miami starter Nate Eovaldi is not the face of the Marlins in the present tense, but he is one of the starters who could be part of the team’s future. Eovaldi checks in with a 3.96 ERA, but he is (and has been capable) of better performances. He will try to challenge Los Angeles’ white-hot pitcher, Zack Greinke, who goes to the mound with a 3.02 ERA after another stellar outing this past Friday, a 7 1/3-inning shutout of the Philadelphia Phillies.
