2008 Kentucky Derby Betting There is going to be an absolute frenzy of betting activity related to the 2008 Kentucky Derby beginning next week.

The 134th running of the Kentucky Derby is on the horizon and there is expected to be a full field of 20 horses.

Known as “the most exciting two minutes in sports,” the Kentucky Derby takes place May 3 at Churchill Downs race track in Louisville, Kentucky.

Unbeaten Florida Derby winner Big Brown is widely considered the favorite to win the Run for the Roses.

Big Brown has raced only three times and is aiming to become the first thoroughbred since the filly Regret in 1915 to win the Derby. Big Brown has won his three lifetime starts by a total of 29 lengths.

Colonel John, which won the Santa Anita Derby, is also highly regarded by bookmakers.

The son of two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Tiznow, Colonel John won by just half a length at Santa Anita but ran his final three-eighths of a mile in 35 1/5 seconds, including a 12 second final furlong.

Big Brown and Colonel John are also ranked 1-2 in the final Top 10 list released before the Derby by The Associated Press.

Pyro, ranked No. 6, rounds out the top three favorites. Pyro was considered by some to be the favorite until finishing 10th in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on April 12.

Another favorite, War Pass, is out of the Derby after suffering a non-life threatening fracture in his left front ankle that will keep him out of action until the fall. War Pass was the reigning 2-year-old champion and had the highest graded earnings of any horse in the field.

The Kentucky Derby is considered the longest continuing sports event in the U.S., having been held every year since 1875. The Derby is a 1¼ mile race for three-year-old purebred horses. The race has been held at the Churchill Downs race track since 1937.

The 2008 Kentucky Derby is expected to be the second most bet on event of the year after the Super Bowl according to Gambling911.com forecasts.
